Block 27 – Sewing Machine

IMG_0990More applique! I decided to do this the quickest way so again I used the raw edge method, but I used a machine blanket stitch to secure the applique pieces prior to quilting it. It worked a bit better this way. I like the results better too. Orange represents creativity, so I thought it was the perfect color for my sewing machine!

This is how I quilted it:

  • Stitched around the outside edge of the each of the applique pieces
  • Echoed the heart to fill in the block
  • Stitch the border design like the other blocks

I used another light background fabric on the back, so the quilting is not a pronounced.

Block 25 – Sunday Best

IMG_0992Not sure I really like applique. I have tried the freezer paper method, the no sewing until you quilt it method, and now the raw edge with light fusible method. I fused the pieces to the background then did the applique and quilting at the same time. It didn’t work very well, but I am ok with how it turned out. From the front it looks good, but the back is a bit messy.

This is how I quilted it:

  • Started with the tulip flower trying to zigzag stitch (but didn’t really like it)
  • Straight stitched around each appliqued piece to secure them
  • Stitch the border design like the other blocks

I did the black embroidery by hand after quilting it. I made sure to not go all the way through the block, so it doesn’t show up on the back.

Block 24 -Inspector Sidekick

IMG_0982

I have two sidekicks – not cats, my dogs, but they don’t help much with my sewing or quilting! They do love helping in the kitchen though – all smiles!

Visit The Splendid Sampler and download the block instructions that include the designer’s story behind this block. This block has lots of small half square triangles in the piecing. The result is a very geometric block.

Nothing fancy in the quilting this time.  This is how I quilted it:

  • X starting in the center.
  • Straight line echoes and ditching in the rest of the block
  • Stitch the border design like the other blocks

I have been using a lot of pink and purple lately. I will need to change it up with some other colors in future blocks so I have a variety of colors. This deep purple really makes the quilting pop.
