I have always enjoyed hand stitching. Get your pattern for this block at The Splendid Sampler.
I decided to add a few more applique pieces to this block than the pattern called for. Most of the applique was done as raw edge, but I did turn some of the pieces: flowers and bird. Unlike the other applique blocks I have done, I sewed these pieces down prior to quilting so that I could do the hand embroidery prior to quilting. I used both satin and blanket stitch for the applique. Once that was completed, I hand embroidered using my stash of embroidery thread from the late nineties. I did a lot of cross stitch back then. I marked the embroidery pattern using a marking pencil and water soluble pen.
Here’s how I quilted it:
- Filled the background using Loopy Lines
- Stitched around the outside of the appliques and along the embroidery.
- Stitch the border design like the other blocks.
Until Next Time!
