2016 Row By Row – I won!

The 2016 Row by Row contest was to complete a quilt using 8 rows and be the first to bring it into a shop. The prize was 25 fat quarters and if you used the row of the shop you brought it to, you won a special prize. I took my quilt into Stitches of Love. They let me pick fat quarters from what they had or cut off the bolt. I chose some of each! They also gave me a $25 gift certificate to use on anything else in the shop. I haven’t spent that yet!

Here’s the story of my Row-by-Row quilt experience.

We had a few days off in late August, so we took a few days to travel to northern Alabama to take the Tiffin Motorhomes Factory Tour. My husband and I dream about full timing it someday in one of these beautiful motorhomes. The tour was really great. If you like factory tours, you should check this one out. You get to walk right along the assembly line and learn about this family owned business that has been in operation since 1972. There aren’t many place to stay in or near Red Bay, Alabama though. We stayed in Fulton, Mississippi and drove to Red Bay for the tour at 9:30 AM. On the way back home to we stopped at quilt shops so I could collect the 2016 Row by Row patterns and kits. A friend had been collecting from her travels as well, so we had some from all over the southeast. I think about 15 different shops. We had both picked ups some kits, so those went into the quilt. I picked up the patterns from right here in town last and found out neither of the shops had a winner yet. So I got started.

I chose the following rows to complete for my quilt (from top to bottom, first the horizontal rows, then the vertical rows):

There are some closeup photos of my rows over on the Stitches of Love Facebook page. Those of you who have read my other posts know that I haven’t been a big fan of applique, but I am liking it more and more. Good thing, because most of these were applique! When the power was out during the hurricane, I used the light coming in the window to trace applique pieces and worked on embroidery for this project. It was a good way to keep busy with no power.

I worked fast! I added a narrow sashing and free motion quilted it. My binding was scraps saved from other quilts and was machine stitched. The backing fabric I found is perfect with state names and highway markers. It will be the quilt that stays in the car for our future road trips. A fitting theme for car trips – Home Sweet Home!
