Block 82 Under the Apple Tree

img_1404

My first hand-pieced block.  This block uses some odd shapes, but comes together nicely. You can get the pattern for the pieced block over at the Splendid Sampler or you can preorder the book. Just a reminder that the patterns will only be available for free for two weeks after the Sampler finishes.

I used the hand-piecing method described by Joan Ford that she shared in her weekly newsletter. She also shows it in a post on her blog on a previous Splendid Sampler block.

Here’s how I quilted it using the open toe free motion foot on my Juki F600:

  • Marked the center with overlapping teardrops to form a spirograph type flower; stitched on the marked lines starting in the center. (I use a water erasable blue pen to mark, but always test your fabric prior to using.)
  • Stitch in the ditch around the center octagon and all of the triangles.
  • Stitch from the center point of each half square triangle. I stitched from corner to corner then from the corner to the center of each side.
  • Stitch the border design like the other blocks.

You can see where it was stitched on the cream colored back of the block.
