Block 86 Unity Star

This block is constructed as a nine patch of diamond in a square blocks. You can get the pattern for the pieced block over at the Splendid Sampler or you can preorder the book. Just a reminder that the patterns will only be available for free for two weeks after the Sampler finishes.I used the Prairie Sky Quilting Templates Folded Corner Clipper to make the diamonds in a square. You can see how it’s done in this video. I cut the background squares at 2 1/2 inches and the squares for the corners at 1 1/2 inches to use the folded corner clipper. I like this tool for completing all kinds of clipped corners. Here’s the flyer that comes with the template.

Here’s how I quilted it using the open toe free motion foot on my Juki F600:

  • Stitch in the ditch around the diamonds.
  • Stitch spirals in each of the diamonds.
  • Stitch the border design like the other blocks.

My favorite color purple for the back of the block!
