Block 92 Double Bees

Another block with applique, embroidery, and piecing. There was a time prior to starting this journey that I dreaded applique and embroidery. That is no longer the case.

Sadly, the Splendid Sampler patterns are no longer available for free, but you can preorder the book that contains all of the patterns. If you haven’t started your blocks yet, it is not too late. It looks like they will be starting a new quilt-a-long again in May after the books ship!

After piecing the block following the instructions, I appliqued the bees using raw edge applique. I traced the images onto fusible Steam a Seam 2. After ironing the pieces in place, I used a button hole stitch on my Juki HZL-F600.

Finally, I used a water soluble pen to mark the scrolls free hand on the fabric. I embroidered them using the stem stitch. Mary Corbet over at Needle ‘n Thread has tutorials for all kinds of embroidery stitches. Love her tutorials. Make sure to go check it out.

Here’s how I quilted it:

  • Stitch in the ditch of the four patch in the center.
  • Stitch around the edge of the appliqued bees.
  • Stitch wandering clover surrounding and connecting everything.
  • Stitch the border design like the other blocks.
