Block 90 Juggling

Mixed techniques in this block: applique, embroidery, and piecing.

Sadly, the Splendid Sampler patterns are no longer available for free, but you can preorder the book that contains all of the patterns. If you haven’t started your blocks yet, it is not too late. It looks like they will be starting a quilt-a-long again in May after the books ship!

I pieced the X’s as directed in the pattern and needle turned the circles. I varied from the pattern by using embroidered loops to connect the balls. I got the idea from Joan Ford in her newsletter from Hummingbird Highway. She used the interlaced chain stitch in place of the bias strips. I did the same using black DMC embroidery thread from my stash. I like the way it came out and I got to practice more embroidery!

Here’s how I quilted it:

  • Stitched around the balls and the loop connectors.
  • Stitched in the ditch of the crosses in the balls.
  • Stitched a large X across the block.
  • Stitch the border design like the other blocks.
